Is There a Solution for Hair Loss?

Hair loss can affect anyone, regardless of sex and age. However, it is the most common in men over 50 years of age. It varies from mild hair thinning to complete baldness, affecting one’s perception of their body image.

Thankfully, technology and medical treatments have gone a long way, and we now have many options to prevent and improve hair loss. Read on to learn why we lose our hair and what you can do about it.

About Hair Loss

We lose between 50 and 100 hairs every day, which is completely normal. However, sometimes an illness, stress, weight loss, cancer treatment, or iron deficiency can accelerate this hair loss rate. Luckily, it is reversible, and your hair goes back to normal once the primary cause is eliminated.

Permanent hair loss is a reality for a majority of middle-aged people, and the medical term for it is alopecia. People usually lose hair in certain areas on the head, causing male and female pattern baldness. These conditions affect around 50 million men and 30 million women in the US.

What Causes Hair Loss?

Male pattern baldness is hereditary, so genetics plays a significant role in its development. In addition to genes, the male sex hormones are responsible for partial or complete baldness.

It is slightly different for women, as their hairline doesn’t recede, and they usually only experience hair thinning. Female hair loss usually occurs during menopause, suggesting that a sudden drop in certain hormones is one of the culprits.

In addition to hereditary factors and hormonal changes, hair loss can be caused by stress, radiation therapy, hair treatments, medications, and supplements.

What Are the Treatments for Hair Loss?

There are currently few available treatments in the US approved for hair loss. That includes medications, hair transplants, low-level laser therapy, and others. Since hair loss is such a widespread problem, countless new solutions emerge on the market every year. However, only a few are actually efficient.

Here are a few commonly available treatments.

Medications

FDA has approved two drugs for hair loss, minoxidil, and finasteride. Both of these drugs were used to treat other conditions when researchers observed favorable effects on hair growth. However, the medication treatment is only temporary, and the benefits seize once you stop taking them.

Hair Transplantation

Hair transplantation refers to harvesting healthy hair follicles and transplanting them to bald spots. These procedures are usually painful and expensive, so there are better options.

Platelet-Rich Plasma

The platelet-rich plasma procedure includes a doctor drawing a patient’s blood, putting it inside a centrifuge, and using the separated platelet-rich plasma for injections. These injections promote healing, and we’ve recently discovered that they can also aid hair loss.
